In the interest of Bahujan community’: BSP decides to go solo in Lok Sabha polls

BSP is fighting the Lok Sabha general elections in the country on its strength with complete preparation and strength. In such a situation, spreading rumors about forming an electoral alliance or third front etc is fake and wrong news,” Mayawati tweeted.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati said on Saturday that the party would contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections independently while refuting rumors of the party forming any electoral alliance.

“BSP is fighting the Lok Sabha general elections in the country on its strength with complete preparation and strength. In such a situation, spreading rumors about forming an electoral alliance or third front etc is fake and wrong news,” she tweeted.

Media should not lose its credibility by giving such mischievous news. People should also be careful,” the BSP chief wrote further.

“Especially in UP, due to BSP contesting the elections alone with great strength, the opposition seems quite restless. That is why they keep trying to mislead people by spreading various kinds of rumors every day. But in the interest of Bahujan community, BSP’s decision to contest the elections alone is firm,” Mayawati added.

This decision comes as the BSP has faced a setback in recent elections, especially in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections where it only won one out of 403 seats.

While in 2019, the party had clinched 10 out of 80 seats but in partnership with the SP.

BSP’s vote share has plummeted by 10% between the 2019 general elections and the 2022 Assembly polls.

In 2022, the party's vote share stood at 12.8%, never dipping below 19% since its inception in 1993. The party whose vote share had never dipped below 19% since its inception in 1993, could manage to secure only 12.8%, in the 2022. UP assembly elections.

BSP’s recent electoral setbacks have been attributed to several factors, including a perceived loss of minority support and concerns about its alignment with the BJP.

Its vote share in the 2022 elections closely mirrored the estimated proportion of Jatav votes, a sub-caste of Dalits to which Mayawati belongs, in Uttar Pradesh.

Jatavs constitute approximately 13% of the total votes in UP, while Dalits as a whole comprise 21%.
